All the census info I've seen indicates that the large majority of people in the suburbs are from the county. I don't recall seeing any large migration to the Memphis metro area from other parts of the country.

If you like the 'burbs, the traffic, the chain restaurants, the ubiquitous strip malls, the marginally better schools — more power to you.

      Pretty spot on, AP.
GR, just where do you think the people who now live in the suburbs came from?! They are nearly all former Memphians who decided to leave when the going got rough, or when busing started, or when they got annexed and faced slightly higher taxes (still low compared to the rest of the country), or the neighborhood got 'bad' or whatever.

As you said, there were some on the TPC that were showing a strong willingness to work together, but ultimately either there were enough non-starter issues for both sides or some of the leaders themselves (both sides) were never willing to work together in the first place.

The difference is, a lot of those cities have focused resources on urban renewal to try to attract young professionals back into the city, rather than trying to overtake their suburbs and force people back into the city (in many cases because that isn't an option for the city).

The Bartlett mayor, the Wissman guy (sorry AP but he's a complete waste, but this is not the time or place), Pickler (depending on which day it was) and I'm sure there were a few others from the county side that were pretty clear that they were not there to work toward a unified anything.

On the other side you have Jones, Hart, LaSimba Gray, and a few others that were just as obstinate about matters.

I guess we will have to see things differently.

i have been somewhat involved since the beginning and my point of view is that the MCS BOE showed no willingness to work with us at all. That that is what it has been all about for us.

You might remember the old SCS was willing to make written guarantees to the BOE that we would not seek taxing authority.

You are correct. People out here want little to do with Memphis.

I'd have to say that I agree with everything you've said, and especially regarding the legislature's treatment of Memphis.

Also, AP, I do agree about the atmosphere being toxic.

Appreciate the kind words, thanks.

I really don't know what the SCC is doing. They have certainly added fuel to the fire.

it goes way beyond the election tomorrow.
