No. Schools might have parallels to business in that they are a collection of people working together toward a common goal, but your characterization is misleading at best. The lack of profit, shareholders, and typical marketplace makes it much more different, so don't hand-wave those things away.

      @clegg,

A business is nothing more than a collector of revenue in return for producing a product or service. It's the job of those in charge of a business to determine the best allocation of that revenue to maximize the output (product or service).

Public schools may be non-profit businesses, but they collect tax revenue, and the leaders are charged with allocating those resources in the best way possible to serve their customers with the best product (in this case the best education) possible.

      Maybe you didn't like the way I worded it, but the point is that bus drivers, cafeteria and custodial workers don't add to the bottom line of the service the schools provide (education). They're necessary employees to day to day operations, but if you have the best and highest paid bus drivers in the world, it will have zero impact on the quality of education the students are receiving (your product).

I never said you could just get rid of those workers.

Studies from all accross the U. S. has shown that contracting out does not save money. Actually, it increases cost because with the lower wages and no benefits, governmental services are accessed more, casusing more to be spent.

      OTP - perhaps their endorsement of contracting out custodial and transportation services, and to close underutilized schools, is to try to help bridge the significant budget gap that exists between the available money and the programs the TPC has proposed to improve educational results for the kids who need it most. Or should we just raise taxes without taking prudent steps to reduce costs?
