I find it interesting that Mr. Mulroy characterizes the munis as costly and wasteful, while the uni plans to spend $1,000 per student more than Germantown does, and the price tag for a merged system over and above separate systems is $72 million. Sorry, sir, but I just don't believe you.

They have already had their taxes raised in the past to pay for funding the schools (what is now called MOE), and now they are being asked to vote to raise the county sales tax to pay for exactly the same thing again.

Here are a couple of sentences from Mr. Mulroy's piece that I find the most telling.

"It's the only one with the power to take half the revenue raised by the suburbs, redirect it away from the costly, wasteful, re-segregative muni school districts, and funnel it back into the unified school system."

and this bit of double speak

"By law, that second half can only be spent on schools, and it gets doled out proportionally to suburban and unified schools alike based on student population — i.e., fairly, based on need."
Which is it Mr. Mulroy, based on student population or fairly, based on NEED? (emphasis added) Student population can be measured, need, for politicians in particular, can be extremely subjective.
Even though I don't always agree with Mr. Mulroy, I appreciate the effort to clarify his position with the public.

While I do tend to agree with Mayor Luttrell that this type of move would be better served after the county school board has had a chance to outline a true budget, I understand the need to put this on the ballot before Millington and Memphis approve the same tax, effectively leaving the unincorporated areas to vote on whether the county can have control over that last 0.5 cent.

I get the point of this being a now or never deal, and I guess the county commission has to decide whether never would be acceptable.

So basically even though the sales tax is the most regressive form of tax, we should all still vote in favor of it so that the county can collect more of it as opposed to the suburbs.
