GW, I know that you are trying to put the republicans in the best possible light on a, really simple problem. It just doesn't pass the smell test.

It is congress, not the president, who holds the power to tax and make law.

Bruce, I didn't say their personal relationship was the downfall of the deal. I said "some taxes on you know who needed to be added" (by Obama), and that was the deal breaker - "you know who", of course, being "the rich".

GW, that analysis is a bit simplistic. The story of negotiations for Obama and Boehner's "Grand Bargain" is a case study in Washington gridlock and partisan politics.

      JHC,

According to Ed Klein, when John Boehner was elected Speaker of the House, neither Obama nor anyone on his staff could find his phone number so the President could call him and congratulate him on his achievement. That leads me to believe he wasn't working as closely with the Republicans as you suggest during the first two years.

Later, after he found the phone number, Obama and Boehner actually came close to hammering out a deficit reduction package, until the last minute when Obama decided some taxes on you know who needed to be added.

A "CHANGE" is certainly going to come...One way or the other. Hopefully, Barack will get four more years to make that change.

We need to mindful that, the Republicans will do anything to get Obama out of the White House...Romney is not the right Republican to get the job done.

What America did in 2008, voters came out like never before to elect Barack Obama and the voters can do it again November 2012..."FOUR MORE YEARS"

Unlike Mitt Romney, Obama said..."You didn't elect me to tell you what you wanted to hear.

It appears to me that President Obama's one great weakness, in spite of his MANY laudable, honorable and admirable characteristics, is that he really did (does?) believe that he can change the way things operate in Washington and, if he just continues to act decent towards them, he seems to think Republicans will "come around" and start acting in the best interest of those they are elected to govern rather than in the best interest of themselves and their special interests.
