There is an article in the Huffington Post where 600 school districts, 75%, in Texas are suing the state for inequities in financing.

What is important about this lawsuit is it shows why the General Assembly in 1982 banned msds and ssds. This happened during and after the small schols suit against Tennessee which the small schools won.

That is why I have been trying to get you to understand that todays trend is consolidation, getting away from smaller districts.

The state of Illinois is also cutting their independent school districts by over half, forcing them to consolidate and revert back to city and/or county districts.

Why is Shelby County so behind the rest of the nation?

Agree that George should rest in peace. I suppose he and I were somewhat apart on the political spectrum, but he was a totally admirable man and a war hero to boot.

I wonder sometimes if we will ever see the likes of such principled politicians again.

I definitely took advantage of this weekend. I coached one child's game, took the kids to the park, and I even had plenty of time late in the day yesterday to enjoy a beer or three on the couch watching football.

You are completely right wanting your children around their like minded peers. The constitution allows for you to easily correct that problem.

You mention the distractions your children have bad at times, not uncommon ones, but when you have a heavy concentration of those distractions, it effects the other students in the school.

Not every child can just be taught to ignore the distractions. Depending on a child's personality, they may fall into the traps set by those distractions, no matter what you as parents do.

That's why I'm going to do everything in my power to surround my children with peers that have the right motivation.

Teacher pay is much too low, most teachers are ill equipped with the real needs of the workforce, fo they have never had a job outside of academia.

We have so many kids from bad environments that in a lot of cases, teachers have no motivation to teach.

A lot of the problems affecting the learning capabilities of certain students is beyond the scope of the state constitution. I know that this sounds callous and cold, but it is a fact.

I wish that every parent would do the right thing about their children's education.

There are no state statistics that lump all students in one category. For MCS you have these numbers for the 11/12 school year.

grades 3-8 TCAP MAth 24%
grades 3-8 TCAP Reading/Language 34%
HS EOC Math: 37%
HS Reading/Language 52%

OTP: Standford just did a study on Memphis charters.
