FYI, in Tennessee everyone is registered as an independent, and the parties have open primaries. You can vote in either the Democrat or Republican primary and change the one you vote in every election if you want.

The credit for the news story goes to the Daily News not the CA. The Daily News may be the only media outlet that has interviewed the school board members and quoted them re the sales tax increase and what they are willing to commit to.

Kudos to the CA for actually doing an article and quoting members of the school board. While the CC8 and City Council are out making promises about pre-K that they have no authority to keep, the school board is flat out telling the public that they can't make that promise.

Not only that, but Cash is telling you that it isn't possible to close 21 schools.

      GW,
You may have already read these but just in case, there is an interesting opinion piece from the county mayor in the CA this AM, and an interesting news piece in yesterday's Daily News about the sales tax increase, quoting members of the unified school board on how the money will be used. It appears there is no solid commitment to spending the money on Pre K. It makes one wonder if A C Wharton and the CC8 are stupid or maybe they think the voters are stupid.

Vote against the gas tax. Memphis pols need another source of revenue (which they will never stop trying to increase), and they can't be trusted to spend it on public transportation anyway, just like they won't be spending the 68 million dollar annual windfall from the end of maintenance-of-effort on the schools.

We also didn't hear how Social Security is in much better shape than most deficit scolds would have us believe, or that it could be fully funded with no reduction in benefits as long as grass grows and wind blows and the sky is blue, if only we would remove the earnings cap on paying into Social Security. We could also pay for everything, including welfare and education through college, by reducing our military expenditures in half.
