In general, I voted for the gas tax, but not the sales tax.

Pamela, based on my interpretation of the local political climate, I don't think there is any way Memphis will be seeing a property tax increase. You'll get one, but it will come through the county.

Wharton is going to be burning the midnight oil trying to figure out a way to sell the sales tax, this time for Memphis City, in six months.

Except the fact that the tax would be .5 cents for every dollar spent, perhaps the problem was that almost everything the Memphis pols said about the tax was a lie, unless Wharton really did plan to tax the poor with sales taxes to reduce property taxes. He certainly had no authority to spend county sales taxes on pre-K, and after dumping K-12 off on the county, perhaps the citizens of Memphis question his resolve when it comes to educating their children.

...as the article stated, Memphis squandered its last chances of having a real impact at the state or national level a decade ago. Unfortunately, the more difficult it becomes to surmount issues that have a particular bent to them due to local demographics (crime, education, service support) the more this little corner of the state will wish it had said influence.
