I have ben fortunate enough ( or maybe partially unfortunate) to be a part of organizations led by both the types you describe.

I wish it were that simple, that one side is good and one bad.

Sometimes even the best CEOs are caught up in economic situations not of their own making and are forced into survival mode. I personally obverved a CEO in tears as he had to lay off his employees and I have seen another who was the most callous bastard I have ever seen do the same thing with absolute indifference.

Unions can be a great thing when the market value, and compensation, of their employees is not being realized.
