since the county's version failed, the city will probably drop the effort.

The argument the businesses have is that is too easy to claim you have had your wages stolen and that businesses would be constantly in court and hiring lawyers to defend frivolous claims from every disgruntled ex employee.

Not saying I agree, just saying.

I hope the Memphis one passes, if only for symbolic reasons. Without heavy penalties for violations, getting caught and only having to pay back wages provides very little incentive to not cheat.

Well, the Memphis Ordinance will come up for final reading this week or next.

Anyone want to wager on whether it passes.

I say it passes. So much for the gop on the county commission, you voted for them.

This is disgusting. What this says to our community is that the "business community" (with the usual idiocy exhibited by the Chamber of Commerce) thinks it is OK to steal wages.

If employees are taking away tips from their employees, as has been alleged, why would there be opposition to stopping that practice?

Can anyone explain what this paragraph means?

"As Mulroy noted afterward, that ordinance required only a majority for passage, and, if it had been adopted, the ordinance itself — which, as written, required 9 votes, or a super-majority — would have needed only a simple majority."
