Renovation has begin on the Hotel Chisca, where WHBQ's "Red, Hot, & Blue" disc jockey Dewey Phillips first introduced the world to Elvis Presley, and rock-and-roll. Working with a skeleton crew of volunteers filmmaker turned preservationist Mike McCarthy removed glass, and acoustic tile from the booth where Phillips conducted the world's first Rock-and-Roll interview.…

Last weekend, the soon-to-be-departed Hi-Tone hosted the 20th anniversary party of another Midtown staple, Underground Art.

In addition to the collaborative art, the event featured performances by Rebel Child, Capgun, New Science System, SVU, Brando Little of the Gloryholes, Jody Stephens of Big Star and Alicja Trout of River City Tanlines, Sin City Scoundrels, Snagglepus, the Sidewayz, Mo Alexander, and Imaginary Friend.

Throughout the afternoon and evening, there was an art auction, with pieces donated by local artists and photographers.…

On Sunday, January 23rd, the Germantown Performing Arts Centre presents “Rhapsody in Boop,” a concert celebrating the animated, jazz-loving sex-pot Betty Boop, who was first introduced to audiences in the 1930s.

But first, a little education courtesy of GPAC’s ArtSavvy series on Tuesday, January 18th, at 7 p.m.…

Bill Hicks
The Essential Collection
(Ryko)

This month, Ryko rolled out a long awaited four-disc (2 CDs, 2 DVDs) retrospective on the now legendary late comedian, Bill Hicks. Since his untimely death in 1994, Hicks' status has slowly but steadily risen to the level of a cult icon, thanks in part to the success of “alternative” comedians such as David Cross, Patton Oswalt, and even Russell Brand, all of whom Hicks is often credited as being an artistic influence on and forerunner to.…

From the department of the ghoulish and disgusting: Medical instruments and other materials relating to the autopsy of Elvis Presley are being put up for auction by Leslie Hindman Auctioneers.

The items — which include a toe tag — were apparently saved by for many years by an embalmer at the Memphis Funeral Home and will be put up for auction in two lots (estimated at $6,000-$8,000 and $4,000-$6,000, respectively) on August 12th.…

This Sunday, June 6th, presents two unique opportunities for local devotees of cult icon Jesco “the Dancing Outlaw” White to delve further into the Appalachian wild-man's bizarre and, at times, comical world.

White, 53, originally achieved notoriety as the subject of the 1991 PBS documentary Dancing Outlaw, which chronicled White's devotion to the dying art of mountain dancing (his father, D. Ray White, is regarded by some as the greatest mountain dancer who ever lived), as well his many criminal exploits, regular drug use, and troubled family life.…

I remember drinking a beer with Jonathan Postal last September, shortly after the death of author, poet and occasional recording artist Jim Carroll who recorded "All the People Who Died" knowing it would probably be played at his funeral. Postal, who had recently helped me with a project about would-be wrestlers in West Memphis, was feeling particularly mortal that night.…
