Put your heart first — Join the American Heart Association Mid-South Heart Walk to save lives
Thousands of Mid-South area residents are expected to join the Heart Walk on Saturday, October 6th, to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America's No. 1 and No. 4 killers. The annual event begins at 8 a.m. at AutoZone Park.
The noncompetitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages.
"For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy may increase for some adults by two hours," said William Kenley, heart walk chairman and administrator and CEO of Methodist Hospital in Germantown. "That's a 'healthy' return on investment and one that we hope will inspire participants to take up walking regularly using American Heart Association Walking Paths and Walking Clubs."
Research has shown walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health. The benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for as little as 30 minutes each day can help reduce the risk of heart disease.
"We want people to know that it is never too late to start down a healthier path," Kenley said. "Our hope is that the Heart Walk will help jump-start a culture of healthy living among participants and increase passion for supporting the lifesaving work of the American Heart Association."
The American Heart Walk is sponsored nationally by Subway and Jenny Craig. Father's legacy inspires first-time Heart Walk fund-raiser
In the early-morning hours of April 11, 2010, Jennifer Cox Cordell was awakened by the ringing of her phone with news that would change her life forever.
"I remember hearing my mom's panicked words," she recalled. "She said, 'It's Dad; he's not breathing.'"
In disbelief, Cordell rushed to the emergency room, thoughts of what was happening to her father racing through her mind.
"I thought for a second that maybe he was having a heart attack," she said. "But there was no way that could happen. He was too strong, and healthy people don't have heart attacks."
She was wrong. Her strong and healthy father, Paul Cox — who led the Collierville High School football team as head coach for more than 30 years — had suffered a fatal heart attack.
Looking for a way to honor her father's memory, Cordell teamed up with the American Heart Association for the 2012 Mid-South Heart Walk. Although it is her first year fund-raising for the Walk, her team, Coach's Heart, has raised more than $1,400. She also sits on the community involvement board for the Heart Walk.
"Because of his death, I learned a heart attack can happen to anyone. Don't assume you don't need to have your heart checked just because you feel good," she said. "I feel this was the last lesson he was leaving me to pass on to others."

Devil's Food Cupcakes with Almond-Mocha Topping on Raspberry Sauce
Serves: 24; 1 cupcake, 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons sauce, and 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons topping per serving
Cupcakes 1 18.25-ounce box devil's food cake mix 1 2.5-ounce jar baby food pureed prunes 1 cup strong coffee, or 1 cup water plus 2 teaspoons instant coffee granules 3 large egg whites 2 tablespoons canola or corn oil
Sauce 2 12-ounce packages frozen unsweetened raspberries, thawed 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Topping 2 teaspoons instant coffee granules 2 teaspoons water 8 ounces frozen fat-free whipped topping, thawed in refrigerator 2/3 cup sliced almonds, dry-roasted
• Preheat the oven to 325°F, or as directed on the package. Lightly spray two 12-cup muffin pans with cooking spray.
• In a large mixing bowl, combine the cupcake ingredients. Follow the package directions for beating the batter and baking and cooling the cupcakes.
• Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, stir together the raspberries, sugar, and cornstarch until the cornstarch is dissolved. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Boil for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes, or until thickened, stirring frequently. Remove from the heat. Let cool completely, about 20 minutes. Stir in the vanilla.
• In a medium bowl, stir together the coffee granules and water until the coffee is dissolved. Fold in the whipped topping until well blended. Cover and refrigerate until needed.
• For each serving, spread 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons raspberry sauce on a dessert plate, top with a cupcake, spoon 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons whipped topping mixture over the cupcake, and sprinkle with about 1 1/2 teaspoons almonds.
