Blues Music Awards

When: Thu., May 6, 5:30 p.m. 2010
Phone: 527-2583
At this year’s 31st Blues Music Awards presented by the Blues Foundation, Buddy Guy will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. But this is not just an honor, says the foundation’s executive director Jay Sieleman: It’s “a little bookkeeping.” Guy, the legendary blues guitarist and singer, was to be presented with the award nearly 10 years earlier, but a conflict kept him away from the ceremony. The foundation then stopped giving out the award until this year, when, Sieleman says, “We’re finally keeping our promise to Buddy Guy.” The awards show is a six-hour-plus evening of music that includes 25 sets featuring this year’s nominees. (Bettye LaVette, 2010 nominee for Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, is pictured above at last year’s awards.) The show in past years has produced mind-bending duets and introduced audience members to blues newcomers who’ve put on show-stopping performances. Plus, it’s an equal-opportunity event where fans and musicians alike are part of the audience. “There’s no private party, no backstage,” Sieleman says. “There’s a great deal of mingling. It’s one big family affair.”

The 31st Blues Music Awards is from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Cook Convention Center. Tickets are $125. Other events throughout the week also are being held in conjunction with the show. For a full schedule and for tickets to the awards ceremony, go to — Susan Ellis
