Critical Choices

Two women; two poets. Same night; same time. Different locations.

That's the case when Ellen Bryant Voigt reads from her work on Thursday night. She's ushering in the fall lineup of the River City Writers Series, presented by the Creative Writing Department at the University of Memphis. And that's the case when Matthea Harvey reads from her work the same night. She's at Rhodes College, guest of Rhodes' Creative Writing Program.

Both writers are past finalists for the National Book Critics Circle award for poetry, and both would love to have you in the audience. But that'll take some creative doing on your part.

Voigt and Harvey have been doing their creative part for years. Voigt is the author of six collections of poetry, served as chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, and teaches at Warren Wilson College. Harvey is the author of three collections, serves as contributing editor at BOMB, and teaches at Sarah Lawrence.

The choice is yours this Thursday, but either way, it's a good night in Memphis for contemporary poetry.

Ellen Bryant Voigt: reading and booksigning at the University of Memphis, Fogelman Executive Center, Room 219, Thursday, September 25th, 7 p.m. Free. For further information on Voigt's schedule at the U of M, call 678-4692. Matthea Harvey: reading and booksigning at Rhodes College, Tuthill Performance Hall inside Hassell Hall, Thursday, September 25, 7:30 p.m. Free. For more information, call 843-3794.
