Dog’s Day

It all started with a novelty T-shirt former Rock 103 DJ Tim Spencer bought for his friend while on vacation in New Orleans. "He wouldn't sit. He wouldn't beg. He wouldn't heel," it read. One mention of that shirt on the air was all it took. Overnight, John McCormack — the bawdy clown prince of Memphis morning radio for 22 years — became the "Bad Dog." But the Dog was always better behaved than his nickname suggested, and between cutting up and cracking up with his various Wake-Up Crew co-hosts and chomping on the occasional Cuban cigar, the rowdy, round-faced jock always made time to help those who were less fortunate than himself.

"God's got us by the heart, the devil's got us by the balls, and we're caught in between," McCormack once commented, describing the naughty Wake-Up Crew's annual Radioathon for Ronald McDonald House, an event that has brought in millions to support families staying in Memphis while their child is receiving treatment at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

This year, McCormack, a single father of two, was diagnosed with leukemia, and on Thursday, November 4th, several Memphis businesses will be donating a portion of their proceeds for a good friend in need. Participating businesses include Alex's Tavern, the Belmont Grill, Brooklyn Bridge, the Butcher Shop, Charlie's Meat Market, the Half Shell, High Point Grocery, Huey's, Jim's Place Grille, Lenny's sub shops, Mortimer's, Patrick's, River Oaks, Soul Fish, the Young Avenue Deli, and many area McDonald's.

"Dog day" Thursday, November 4th, at participating locations. Individuals may also contribute to the John "Bad Dog"
