Dollar Donation

New group gives free money to good HOMEs.

Imagine handing your hard-earned cash out to friends, neighbors, even strangers.

That's what a new gay organization, Homosexuals of Memphis Embrace (HOME), does for other organizations and charities in both the straight and gay communities.

They're not exactly handing over their paychecks, but they do spend hours fund-raising with 100 percent of the proceeds going to other organizations in need.

"There's a lot of groups in the gay and lesbian community, but there weren't any benevolent groups to help them raise money," says co-founder Richard Beaudoin. "We like all the groups out there, and we hope to help bring them all together."

Since the group formed this summer, they have raised funds to help the Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center put on Outflix, the annual gay film festival. They also hosted a bake sale to raise money for the annual Memphis Gaymes, a gay sports festival.

In efforts to bridge the gap between the straight and gay communities in Memphis, HOME also raises money for groups that aren't necessarily associated with the gay community. They recently volunteered at the Hope House Cookie Carnival. They've raised $300 for Hurricane Katrina victims.

"One of our founders is straight, and we're hoping to show people that we're not just out there for the homosexual community," says Beaudoin.
