Draw!

If Stan Lee were writing this, he'd probably say something like, "Hey, true believers, do you want to learn to draw comic books and invent your own superheroes just like the pros do it? Tripp Lamkins wants to help!"

Lamkins — who will lead the Create Your Own Superhero workshop at Flicker Street Studio on Saturday, July 28th — turns into a 12-year-old when he recalls his first visit to the Marvel Comics bullpen. It was a stroke of luck for a lifelong comics fan who started tracing pictures of Spider-Man when he was 4. The bass-playing Marvel fan was in New York gigging with his band the Grifters. Turns out, he also had a big fan who worked for the comic book publisher of his dreams.

Lamkins accepted an invitation to tour but chickened out when he was offered a chance to meet some of his favorite artists. He would later return with samples of his work. Even though he wasn't offered a job on the spot, he was given some encouraging words. That's all it took.

"I've never outgrown it," Lamkins says of his drive to create new comic book characters.

Lamkins says his Flicker Street Studio workshop is aimed at teens who want to draw superheroes and will focus on a handful of key ideas like anatomy and dynamic poses.

"One of my favorite things to draw is that moment right before the battle is engaged," Lamkins says.

"We'll work on storytelling too. There are tricks for leading the reader's eye across the page."
