Erykah Badu

When: Thu., Sept. 10, 8 p.m. 2009
Phone: 525-1515
Price: $57-$67
More than a decade in, the neo-soul genre flies only as high as the idiosyncrasies and inspiration of its artists. The laid-back grooves tending toward the consistent and unshowy, the voices rarely overpowering, neo-soul is nearly as dependent on artistic personality as folk rock. And while I think D’Angelo, Jill Scott, and Raphael Saadiq have all peaked higher, no one has worked this terrain more consistently than Erykah Badu, whose prickly intellect and stand-up-comedian-worthy sense of humor have served her well since 1997’s Baduizm. Mixing earth mother (“Apple Tree”), social commentator (“Penitentiary Philosophy”), radical rabblerouser (“Soldier”), around-the-way-girl (“Otherside of the Game”), and musical vaudevillian (the priceless “Tyrone”), Badu works all the angles. She’ll surely showcase many facets of this well-rounded musical personality when she plays the Orpheum as part of the Southern Heritage Classic weekend. Badu takes the stage Thursday, September 10th, at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $57 to $67. — Chris Herrington
