Re: “The Death of Suburbia

As long as urban public schools are unsafe and inadequate, suburbs with municipal school systems will thrive. Who can afford private schools in urban areas? Oh yeah, rich folks.

Re: “#adaywithoutimmigrants in Memphis; Not Quantifiable, But Noticeable

Wonder how many illegal immigrants broke the law that day? Speeding tickets, citations, arrests, etc...? After all, "a day without immigrants" works both ways... a day without them working and a day without them breaking the law. It would be interesting to find out Flyer.

Re: “Police Focus of State of City Address

And 40+ veteran cops are retiring in April with more scheduled to retire later this year. And there has been a steady loss of about 5-10 officers per month for the past year as they leave for other police departments with better pay & benefits. The elephant in the room is pay and benefits which Strickland refuses to acknowledge. A 2.5% raise last year was heralded by Strickland as his commitment to hiring and retaining officers but it has not worked. A 2.5% raise after 6 years of no raises averages out to about a 0.4% raise per year. Meanwhile officers have seen their retiree healthcare completely cut off, and current officers healthcare premiums have gone up 42% in that same time frame. Strickland's own peer city survey showed patrolmen in Memphis were on average underpaid by $3,000 a year, sergeants underpaid by $9,000 a year, and lieutenants underpaid by $18,000 a year. Will Strickland restore retiree healthcare? Probably not. Will Strickland follow his own survey and give patrolmen a 3-4% raise, sergeants a 7-8% raise, and lieutenants a 14-15% raise? Probably not. So without giving officers competitive raises or competitive benefits... how does Memphis retain and recruit officers? (Think about it, he is saying 2,000 people applied to be officers, only 31 will graduate in this next class, and only 100 will start the next class. History shows that only 50-60 will graduate out of that class. Obviously we aren't receiving anywhere near enough qualified applicants.)

Re: “Memphis Immigration Lawyers Fear the Worst, Look to Congress for Relief

@anon - no one was deported over the weekend. You're watching too much fake news on CNN. Over the weekend, 320,000+ immigrants came into the USA. Only 109 were detained in order to determine their legal status.

@Grove - somehow you are missing that most of Trump's EO's have been made specifically to counteract Obama's EO's.

Re: “PODCAST: Mayor Strickland Looks Back On His First Year, Looks Ahead

How are you going to hire more cops? What pay and benefit package for cops is more attractive than other mid-major cities? The #1 way to make the retirement package better and attract more qualified recruits is to restore the 70% healthcare subsidy for police retirees. This is the elephant in the room. But Strickland says this will not happen. OK, so what are you going to do? Strickland's own peer city survey last year showed MPD officers are paid about $3,000 less than officers in other cities, MPD sergeants are paid about $9,000 less, and MPD lieutenants are paid about $18,000 less than their counterparts in the other cities in that survey. Will Strickland restore the healthcare benefits? Will he raise officers, sergeants, and lieutenants salaries in accordance with the disparity shown in his own survey? We shall see. I expect he will champion another 1% or 2% raise for police and call it a day.
