Fly on the Wall

Fictional Facts

Although your Pesky Fly is still working the political convention beat, I've got some eyes and ears on the ground back home in the Bluff City, making sure I'm kept up to date on all things ridiculous.

This week I was particularly surprised to read a letter to the editor of The Commercial Appeal from a fellow named George in Germantown. While we agree that reader letters should represent a healthy variety of spin and opinion, it's always disconcerting to read unbeatable falsehoods presented as facts, such as this one:

"[Democratic presidential nominee Barack] Obama has a wife who earns $400,000 a year as a lawyer and in academia," George writes, adding that [GOP nominee] John McCain's wife Cindy "runs a small business."

"Who understands better the problems of budgeting and making do with only so much income?" George then asks.

Of course, Cindy McCain is an heiress whose worth has been estimated to exceed $100 million. The "small business" Cindy McCain inherited was Hensley & Co., America's third-largest Anheuser-Busch distributor. Her wealth is so great that it's allowed her husband to use the family's private jet on the campaign trail and to purchase so many houses he can't tell the press how many he owns.

Naked protesters

At first the Fly-Team thought this protester in Denver went over the top by marching through the streets in nothing but his jockey shorts and a message shirt.

And then we got to St. Paul and this was waiting for us:
