Fly on the Wall

Crime, Punishment, Etc.

Les Smith of Fox 13 News reported that convicted felons — like everybody else in the entire country — are having a tough time finding and keeping jobs in the faltering economy. According to Smith, "Many [felons] live just blocks away from the hub of Memphis' downtown." But in spite of this convenient proximity to tall buildings full of people who are barely hanging onto their own jobs, these former crime-workers can't seem to catch a break.

An unidentified Orange Mound resident, released from prison a year ago after spending 15 years in jail on a felony conviction, told Smith that he was trying to do the right thing, but that wasn't good enough. "They don't want us to do the right thing, because we've been in jail," the ex-prisoner said. "They look at us like we're criminals."

Woof

Whitehaven resident Taraus Miller was shot in the head and killed near the intersection of Summer Wells and Piney Woods Road. Witnesses say the man and his assailant were arguing over a dog, which makes the Fly-Team long for the good old days when people were shot and killed over drugs, money, and parking spaces. In related news, legislation permitting gun owners to carry concealed heat into places that sell beer and liquor by the drink is moving right along.

Hard Time(s)

Federal inmate Marshall DeWayne Williams was recently sentenced to serve an additional five years in prison for sending fake anthrax (actually a sugar substitute) to a judge through the mail. Reports say that Williams was attempting to draw attention to what he has described as his unfair imprisonment for another crime: killing his stepfather with a pipe bomb. On the bright side, Williams won't be forced to look for work in the depressed job market.
