News Channel 3 recently reported that a couple "who looked like they belonged in East Memphis" walked out on their $151 check at Owen Brennan's. After downing eight glasses of wine, two appetizers, and a pair of entrees, the East Memphis types said they were going to duck out of the non-smoking restaurant and enjoy an after-dinner cigarette but never came back.

The eat-and-run bandits recently pulled the same stunt at Buckley's steakhouse but have since confessed their "honest mistake" after Buckley's management distributed pictures of the couple via e-mail. According to Channel 3, they were also "remorseful" for having scammed Owen Brennan's and are "seeking help."

Or at least better disguises.

Political Opportunity

Last week John Weaver, longtime GOP strategist, told The Washington Post that the immediate future wasn't too bright for the Republican Party. "The voters have chosen new management [in the White House] for a reason," he said, expressing doubts that a viable presidential candidate would emerge anytime soon. "At this rate, if you're a junior Jaycees president in Memphis, you could be in line for the nomination."

Good/Hard Times

Let's raise our frosty mugs in a toast to Chuck Skypeck's delicious Ghost River brews. The Memphis Business Journal reports that consumer spending is down, real estate is down, car sales are down, and construction is down. To top things off, unemployment in Memphis has risen to a whopping 9.65 percent. In spite of all this bad news, Skypeck, the master brewer for Ghost River Brewery, told the Daily News that he's adding a new 900-gallon fermenter in order to increase his brewery's capacity from 2,500 kegs per year to more than 3,300. Skol!
