Reatarded

In a fantastic review of recent releases, The Washington Post describes Memphis rocker Jay Reatard as a "workaholic" who has provided listeners with "a wonderful jolt in an era of plodding indie rock." Although Reatard is certainly prolific, this may be the first time the Bluff City's l'enfant terrible, once as famous for his tantrums as his tunes, has ever been called a workaholic.

People Food

On Wednesday, August 12th, The Commercial Appeal ran with a local story intended to piggyback off the success of the film Julie & Julia. The front-page teaser for the story, while technically not incorrect, was just ambiguous enough to be troublesome: "Couple cooked for Julia Child." Hopefully for Julia, they were a warm and tender people with good taste. And not too salty. Don't be afraid, indeed!

Sympathy for Willie

Last week, a firestorm of criticism followed former mayor Willie Herenton's revealing interview with TV news anchor Joe Birch. Ever the contrarians, the Fly-Team searched the far reaches of the popular social-networking site Twitter to see if we could find anybody tweeting for the mayor or at least tweeting in his defense.

After extensive searches for "Herenton," "Herrington," and "Harrington," we discovered a complete absence of pro-Herenton commentary on Twitter, and, even after he spent the better part of two decades as mayor, many Memphians still can't spell Willie's last name. The purest example of the anti-Willie sentiments flying around the Twitterverse come from commenter @Jasonstockdale, who wrote, "Willie Harrington is an idiot."
