Fly on the Wall

Hot, hot, hot

No doubt about it, Memphis is the new black, and New York's media mavens can't get seem to get enough of our Bluff City:

• When New York Daily News reporter Jeff Wilkins suggested that "Elvis' unique style" might not have a place in the modern world, 44-year-old Greenwich Village resident Doug Vannoni set him straight.

"I think if Elvis fell out of the sky today and started walking the streets of Manhattan, people would think he is very fashionable and cool," Vannoni said while awaiting a haircut at Graceland, a Brooklyn motorcycle garage turned hair salon. Graceland owner Corvette Hunt assured the reporter that pompadour haircuts were making a comeback.

BroadwayWorld.com reports that Two Boots Pizza in Hell's Kitchen celebrated "the SLICE OF BROADWAY" Memphis-style by creating a slice called "Huey's Bad Boy." The "Bad Boy," named for the character Huey Calhoun in the musical Memphis and not for the Mid-South's favorite burger-loving gold miner, is topped with pulled pork, red onions, coleslaw and sauce from the Bar-B-Q Shop.

• A recent feature in The New York Times described Midtown Memphis as the region's "hipster epicenter," a diverse area "that is now home to posh cocktail bars as well as divey rock clubs and longstanding juke joints." According to the Times, Midtown-Rock-City "parties late, very late."

Playbill, a monthly magazine for theatergoers, pays tribute to Memphis with a column titled "From Beale Street to Broadway," suggesting that theater patrons can't fully appreciate Memphis the musical unless they "get acquainted with the city and the sounds that emanated from its storied streets." It also noted that yet another Memphis-themed musical, Million Dollar Quartet, makes its Broadway debut at the Nederlander Theatre in March.
