Fly on the Wall

Google Eyes

Great news on the Google ultra-high-speed-Internet front. The Commercial Appeal recently reported that GoogleFiber.com ranks Memphis at number seven on its list of 21 municipalities hoping to be a test bed for Google's one-gigabyte Internet service. The less-than-great news — as the CA subsequently reported in an editor's note — is that GoogleFiber.net isn't an official Google poll. It's just an online poll that anyone can participate in at least once a day in the hopes that Google CEO Eric Schmidt might take some time away from running the company and become enthralled by another Internet poll. According to the original article, "This latest online survey sets out to determine the city most deserving of the proposed Google Fiber Network. And that means — at least in this case — the Bluff City has just as good a chance as any other contender to make it to the top." Or we could all just ask the Magic Eight Ball.

Mongo Jr.

Bizarro Shelby County mayoral candidate Ernest Lunati is no Prince Mongo, though he erroneously claims to be the good prince's brother on YouTube. Last week, Jackson Baker, The Flyer's political analyst, posted some bizarre footage of a Shelby County mayoral forum wherein Lunati launched into an incomprehensible hissy about cops and crack deals. The tirade closely resembled one of Mongo's seldom-noted comedy routines. Lunati, using the alias of Prince Mongo's brother, also routinely films himself performing "comic" monologues in either a bathroom or against a white wall with naked Barbie dolls taped to it. In one recent video posted to YouTube and since removed, Lunati explains why Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated. It seems it may have had something to do with African Americans calling each other a racially offensive name, but it's hard to be sure. Lunati's videos all contain a disclaimer stating that everything he does is a parody. Of what it is impossible to say.
