Fly on the Wall

Best Headline

Admittedly, this story has nothing to do with Memphis, but it was just too good to pass up. The Cybercast News Service, which was originally called the Conservative News Service, has published a story titled "Obama Celebrates Anti-Police Riot Started at Mafia-Owned Bar for Transvestites." The sensational headline refers to the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which did start at a mafia-owned bar frequented by gay and transgender people and which are widely regarded as the beginning of the gay rights movement.

Ghost Story

Mabry Guenther sees dead people. And demons. And other weird stuff. This week, the Memphis resident was arrested after demolishing his hotel room like a rock star while fighting invisible forces from a world beyond. Witnesses say Guenther demolished a microwave, ripped wiring from the ceiling, and flooded the room with water from the bathtub. WREG reported that he'd been speaking to ghosts, who told him to release a demon that lived in the room. When the police arrived, Guenther, who is white, told the white cops to stay away, because "they got demons in them" too.

Neverending Elvis

The fourth-season premiere of TLC's hit series Hoarding: Buried Alive launches July 8th with an episode about an Elvis impersonator who depleted his bank account to buy Elvis memorabilia. "I'd rather be a poor man with garbage than a poor man with nothing," he said.

Big & Beautiful

Memphis regularly ranks on national lists for obesity, making it a natural city to host the Miss Plus America Pageant, which comes to town June 26th through 30th. Mark your calendars.
