Fly on the Wall

Sexy burger, scary Memphis, and weed

We're Sexy
A hard-hitting CBS News report about the marketing of specialty hamburgers revealed that a successful burger launch requires mad flavor and sex appeal. Memphis was flattered in the process. The money quote: "Even if  [a tasty burger] makes it to stores, without a sexy name, it can fizzle.  Take the recent Memphis BBQ Burger. We tested that originally as the Pulled Pork Thickburger. It didn't sell nearly as well."

We're Scary
The Wall Street Journal reports that Memphis is America's sixth most-frightened city. According to the WSJ's Top-10 list, only 55.1 percent of the city "feels safe at night." In related news, do 44.9 percent of Memphians spend too much time reading Top-10 lists?

We're Talented
Midtown's own honky-tonk heroine Grace Askew snuck in a little neologism after turning in a very Memphis re-working of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Were Made for Walking" on The Voice. When Blake Shelton, who was excited to the point of stammering, asked Askew about her style she said, "I like to call it Bluntry. Blues and country." "I just think you and I could make history on this show together," Shelton said.

We're Dry
Speaking of blunts, last week, Memphis police made four arrests and seized more than a ton of marijuana. The impact of this bust on overnight sales at Taco Bell has yet to be determined.

We're Helpful
Speaking of Taco Bell, if your Memphis in May barbecue team is searching for a clever name, you're welcome.
