Flyer Earns Four Altweekly Awards

Staff writers for the Memphis Flyer brought home four writing awards, presented earlier this month during the 13th annual Altweekly Awards competition in Philadelphia. The national awards, hosted by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, were administered by the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

The Flyer winners were:

• Chris Davis — Second place for investigative writing for a series of articles that explored the connection between Networx and MLGW.

• John Branston — Second place for media reporting for "Monetizing Content at The Commercial Appeal," a look at the daily newspaper's new policy of allowing local businesses to sponsor news sections.

• Chris Herrington — Second place for music criticism for three sample music reviews: "It's a Rap," "Bad-Vibe Bands," and "Johnny Cash's Block Party."

• John Branston — Third place for column writing, for a selection of his weekly City Reporter columns.
