Galactic featuring Cyril Neville with Cedric Burnside & Lil' Malcom

When: Fri., April 16 2010
New Orleans-based jazz-funk ensemble Galactic are an adventurous, versatile group that, left alone, are sort of a Crescent City answer to such jazz & jam predecessors as Medeski, Martin & Wood. But the band might be at its best when dedicating itself to a specific genre and taking on related collaborators. With 2007’s From the Corner to the Block, Galactic went hip-hop, backing up rappers such as Boots Riley, Mr. Lif, and Lyrics Born. This year they’ve put out their total-immersion New Orleans record, Ya-Ka-May, on which they incorporate a bevy of hometown vocalists and helpmates, including Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint, and Walter “Wolfman” Washington. A couple of the band’s Ya-Ka-May collaborators — New Orleans royalty Cyril Neville and Corey Henry of the Rebirth Brass Band —  will be making the trip when the band plays Minglewood Hall Friday, April 16th. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are $20. North Mississippi blues duo Cedric Burnside and Lightnin’ Malcolm open. — Chris Herrington
