Get Enlightened

Will Tuttle, with his scruffy brown beard and long hair, looks a little like Jesus. And he acts the part too, when he preaches about compassion, joy, and inner peace. But unlike the Son of God, Tuttle is a Buddhist and former Zen monk, and he'll be spreading the love through music, lectures, sermons, and workshops from May 7th to May 9th.

On Saturday at 4 p.m., Tuttle will lecture on his book, The World Peace Diet, at the monthly meeting of the Memphis-based vegetarian social group, Food Awareness, at Escape Alley Sundry.

"Tuttle provides people the abilities and tools to step outside the typical, harmful American diet," said Vaughan Dewar, founder of Food Awareness.

On Sunday, Tuttle will deliver the morning sermon at First Unity Church in Cordova, and he'll perform a piano recital of original music at the church that evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. He and wife Madeline, a painter, also will be hosting private sessions in which the couple will create personalized music and paintings for individuals and couples. "I tune in to someone, and so does Madeline. It's like their spirit just pulls it out of us," Tuttle said.

And finally, on Monday at 7 p.m., the former monk will host a workshop at First Unity Church on developing intuition and meditating more effectively.

"We have to connect with our inner wisdom to live our own life authentically," Tuttle said.

Food Awareness Lecture, Saturday, May 7th, 4 p.m., Escape Alley Sundry, 651 Marshall (FoodAwareness.org); Piano Passion Concert, Sunday, May 8th, 6:30-8:30 p.m., and "Opening the Intuitive Gate" Workshop, Monday, May 9th, 7-9 p.m., First Unity Church, 9228 Walnut Grove (753-1463).
