Harold Ford on Steve Cohen and the Congressional Black Caucus

Tucker Carlson had the new chairman of Democratic Leadership Council, Harold Ford Jr., on his show Monday night. Ford tap-danced around a number of softball political questions regarding his preference for Obama or Hillary, race and gender in politics, and other subjects.

Carlson then turned to the recent brouhaha regarding Ford's 9th District successor in Congress, Steve Cohen, and Cohen's spurned attempt to join the Congressional Black Caucus.

Carlson asked pointblank whether or not Cohen should have been admitted to the CBC. Ford's response, "Uh, look, Tucker, I'm not in Congress anymore ... " More tap-dancing ensued. An answer to the question did not.

Indeed! I've never seen Harold Ford Jr. squirming and at such a loss for words. I've been a fervent supporter of Ford's, but I've never seen the racially biased side of him, as I'm in East Tennessee. You can have him, Memphis.

If you asked me the same question I would give you a answer.I would choose Hillary.,because she has the experience in,Washington insider, social issues, economics, technology, industry, crime, education, know how to handle the U.S.deficit.,etc.Obama is a very intelligent man and politician.,but he has never held a entire country in his hand, and had to be accountable 24hrs a day.Hillary was there with Bill.,and also very active in the decision making somewhat in the White House, also with this country as the First Lady.Obama is very new to the political sceen.,experience place a big part in politics. Our next President needs to be very, very seasoned!!!!!!!Walter Payne Democrat,Proud Memphian,Proud American.

  • Shea Flinn Sworn in as State Senator

George Shea Flinn III, the Democrat whose father is a Republican county commissioner, became a Democratic state senator Friday morning, taking the oath of office from no less than Lt. Governor (and Senate speaker) John Wilder in a ceremony at the Crescent Club. On hand were several legislative dignitaries of both parties, as well as congressman-elect Steve Cohen, whose seat Flinn was selected by the Shelby County commission to fill. The new senator will take to Nashville a venerable leather briefcase once owned by his great-uncle, former U.S. Senator Richard Russell of Georgia.

  • Vanity Fair Sends a Valentine to Ford, a Passing Nod to Cohen

Well, what doth reason have to do with affairs of the heart? The nation’s glossiest general-interest mag devotes an 18-page spread in the February issue to playas on the D.C. political scene. Two of our guys are pictured: new 9th district congressman Steve Cohen and the man he succeeded, defeated Senate candidate Harold Ford Jr. Why does Ford, a loser in the election, get a whole page to himself? Not even Ted Kennedy got that, and winner Cohen gets the merest little postage-stamp mug on a page devoted to Capitol Hill newcomers.
