Hear Hear

Listen up, fellow Memphians, there's a multitude of intriguing talks happening around town this week.

On Thursday at 5:30 p.m., Jason Womack aims to light a fire under you with his talk "Your Best Just Got Better." The talk is inside Blount Auditorium at Rhodes College. At 6:30 p.m., local gun enthusiast John Kanne will lead a tour through the Brooks Museum's "Armed and Dangerous," while discussing the history of pistols and rifles featured in the exhibit.

On Friday at noon at the Urban Child Institute (600 Jefferson), Michael Minor will lecture as part of the CHEER seminar series, dedicated to health education and economic empowerment. Minor will give his vision on how the faith-based community can encourage healthy diets. (BTW, Minor, a pastor, is best-known for banning fried chicken from his church.) Also on Friday at 6 p.m. in the University of Memphis' Arts & Communication Building, noted Native American artist and scholar Edgar Heap of Birds will deliver the talk "Heads Above Grass, Indigenous Voices of Political Public Art."

On Wednesday, Artemis Joukowsky will discuss and show scenes from Two Who Dared, a documentary he produced about his grandparents, who helped Jews escape from Czechoslovakia. The evening is presented by Facing History and Ourselves and is at 7 p.m. at Christian Brothers University. At the University of Memphis' University Center at 7 p.m., photojournalist Tony Zumbado will present "From Hurricane Katrina to the War in Gaza: Photojournalism in Disaster and Crisis-ridden Environments." Zumbado witnessed the conditions at the New Orleans convention center post-Katrina and also reported on the bodies left behind at Memorial Hospital.
