In the Cards

This weekend, thousands of powerful wizards will be duking it out with enchantments and sorcery at the Memphis Cook Convention Center. No, it's not Mid-South Con time but rather the largest competition of the year in the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour.

For the first time, the role-playing card game, in which players act as wizards battling opponents with spells and fantasy creatures, is hosting their annual finals bout in Memphis.

Though much of the weekend is devoted to gaming matches between professional Magic players, the public also is invited to compete for iPods, iPhones, digital cameras, foiled decks of Magic cards, and other prizes.

Brave gamers will even have a chance to battle famous Magic players in "gun-slinging tournaments." Magic card collectors who care more about the fantasy artwork than playing the game will have a chance to meet the artists and have their cards signed.

"Magic: The Gathering" Pro Tour, Thursday-Sunday, December 11th-14th. Memphis Cook Convention Center, 255 N. Main. For a list of public tournaments, go to wizards.com/worlds.
