Make Mom Happy in Memphis This Weekend

05/09/2008 - 09:35 pm
Make Mom Happy in Memphis This Weekend There are plenty of Mother's Day brunches and buffets this weekend, many of which are listed in our online calendar. But if yo' mama would rather stray from tradition, there are plenty of other fun parent-friendly gatherings this weekend.

Let mom stuff her face with spanakopita ...

The Memphis Week That Was

05/09/2008 - 12:34 pm
The Memphis Week That Was Everyone is against blight, but blight still wins most of the time.

In his schools speech this week, Mayor Herenton called for removing blight around schools. Fine, but that is a city and county function, not a school function, and he has been running the city for 16 years. So get someone at Code Enforcement to crack down on blight around schools.

And then put the squeeze on COGIC and the old Chisca Hotel ...

Andrew Earles at Goner Records -- Just Farr a Laugh

05/09/2008 - 11:53 am
Andrew Earles at Goner Records -- Just Farr a Laugh Regular Flyer contributor Andrew Earles is primarily a music writer but has for years lived a double creative life as a humorist, performing onstage, on the page, and, perhaps most successfully, on tape via a series of prank phone calls he's produced over recent years with Brooklyn-based partner Jeffrey Jensen ...

Vance Lauderdale's Blog: The Man Who Walked on Water

05/09/2008 - 11:04 am
Vance Lauderdale's Blog: The Man Who Walked on Water "Take a close look at this rather fuzzy image. It's from an old postcard archived in the Lauderdale Library, and it shows just what you think it shows: A gentleman in long pants, jacket, and cap is WALKING down the middle of the Mississippi River. The photo was taken just as he passed Arkansas City, Arkansas, sometime in January 1907 ..."

Ambassador Talks Turkey on Kurds, Armenians

05/08/2008 - 05:06 pm
Ambassador Talks Turkey on Kurds, Armenians Members of the Memphis Rotary Club heard some unexpectedly tough talk on Thursday from Nabi Sensoy, ambassador to the United States from Turkey, this year's Memphis in May honoree. Though most of his 30-minute luncheon address to Rotarians at the Convention Center was devoted to the polite bromides expected on such an occasion (example: "I'm looking forward to 'walking in Memphis'"), Sensoy minced no words when it came to several specific problem areas.

Annual Blues Music Awards in Tunica Thursday Night

05/08/2008 - 02:41 pm
Annual Blues Music Awards in Tunica Thursday Night The blues may be a foundational element for most of American music, but these days the genre is pretty self-contained -- widely restricted to a network of specialty clubs and festivals catering to a loyal base of fans. The Blues Music Awards -- the annual "blues Grammys" sponsored by the Memphis-based Blues Foundation since 1980 -- is of and for this base of committed fans ...

Hot Properties: A Renovator's Despair

05/08/2008 - 11:23 am
Hot Properties: A Renovator's Despair This wonderful house stands in the Lenox subdivision between Cooper and East Parkway. The area has been developed for more than a century, with lots of Queen Anne cottages and a few other Victorians. This cottage seems more like the earlier, vernacular Victorian, with its center door and broad front porch...
