Letters to the Editor

The Flyer is sexist, John Branston will be missed, Obama is an idiot, Republicans are idiots and anarchists.

Too Much Bosom?

Your September 26th cover image ("Best of Memphis" issue) and the portions of the woman's bosom repeated throughout that issue will be featured in our upcoming exhibit "They say sex sells ... but we're not buying it."

The exhibit of images exposing sexism and violence against women in local and national media will be on display during the Broad Avenue Art Walk on Friday, November 8th, from 6 to 9 p.m. Our exhibit, organized by the Memphis Area Women's Council and Rhodes College, will be in the offices of Splash Creative at 2574 Sam Cooper Boulevard.

At 7:30 p.m., we will present awards highlighting particular themes. Your leopard-skin-clad, red-clawed, "hot stuff" female is certainly a contender.

On the following day, Saturday, November 9th, from 2 to 5 p.m., the public is invited to a free screening of Miss Representation, a documentary on the effects of sexism in media with refreshments and a panel discussion. That will be in Blount Auditorium at Rhodes College.

We hope to see you, your staff, and some of your readers at these events — perhaps to accept an award!

John Branston

I was to sorry to read of John Branston's departure from the pages of the Memphis Flyer (City Beat, October 3rd issue). Though I didn't always agree with him, Branston was a good reporter who always seemed like a straight shooter and who wasn't afraid to take on the conventional wisdom. I wish him success in whatever he decides to do next.

Comings and Goings

So three writers left the Flyer (Letter from the Editor, October 3rd issue). That seems like a big blow, but by my count, you just hired six new people! As someone on the internet wrote, it's like [former Grizzlies coach] Hubie Brown took over the Flyer's HR department — wholesale substitutions.

It's Obama's Fault

President Obama and his minions are spending us into the gutter. He is the reason America can't pay its debts. He doesn't give a rat's ass about America — only himself. Do they think a crash like 1929 can't happen today? Obama needs to start running the government like most people run a business and family finances.

Obama cared about the debt ceiling when he was a senator. He claimed Bush was wrong to raise the debt ceiling. Now he's changed his tune. Maybe he's "evolved" on that issue, like so many others. What an idiot we have running our country.

Jimmy Carter, I am sorry I ever said you were the worst president. Obama beats you by a mile.

It's the GOP's Fault

How can there be any question about who is responsible for shutting down the U.S. government? This was the GOP Tea Party's plan from the start, including Senator Ted Cruz's stupid, fake "filibuster."

It's clear that the mainstream Republicans in Congress don't have the courage to stand up to the nut-bag wing of their own party. Speaker John Boehner and other Republicans keep using the lame catchphrase: "The American people don't want a government shutdown, and they don't want Obamacare."

If they know the American people don't want a government shutdown, why did they shut it down? And they are wrong about Americans not wanting the Affordable Care Act, as the millions of citizens who are attempting to sign up every day make clear.

The Affordable Care Act is law, passed by Congress and approved by the Supreme Court. If we allow a tiny minority to overturn established law by using anarchist tactics, we fail as a republic. This is just another premeditated crisis orchestrated by the Republican Party to appease its Tea Party base. If they want to overturn Obamacare, there is a tried and true method — win the House, the Senate, and the presidency. Good luck with that.
