No 'Actor' Defense, Says John Ford

Former senator also suggests Bowers won't necessariy plead guilty

John Ford, the former state senator who is considered the star player in the rollout of the Tennessee Waltz saga, won’t disclose his legal strategy as he awaits trial for his role in the FBI sting sometime early next year. But Ford promises “a correct presentation” and insists, ‘I don’t have to prove anything. They have to prove something!”

One clue as to what that correct presentation won’t include: any reference to the independent movie filmed by undercover informant Tim Willis in the same downtown office space where one of the government’s videotapes has shown Ford pocketing FBI cash. That money, several thousand dollars worth, was handed over by a supposed representative of “E-Cycle,” a fictitious computer firm used as an FBI front. “That’s news-media talk. That don’t mean nothing!” Ford scoffed about speculation that he might claim only to have been an actor in Willis’ fictional drama.

Ford also doubts that this week’s resignation from the state Senate of former colleague Kathryn Bowers, ostensibly for health reasons, necessarily means she is about to change her plea, as expected, to guilty. “She’s had real bad health,” Ford said. “I’m privy to some stuff. I mean, long before all of this came up.”

Dempseys' promoter Rollin Riggs sent us this photo of his group's recent gig with the Prez and Prime Minister Koizumi of Japan. Koizumi stepped to the mic and sang an Elvis tune. The president recorded the event for national security reasons and tapped the Dempseys' phones and bank records.

This picture also raises the quesion of whether heads of state get together before joint appearances to discuss how they'll dress: "Today, I'm going with an open-collared dress shirt and slacks. I'm rolling the sleeves up two turns."

    "Cool. Me too."
