Bred in Texas and then in the coffee houses and jazz clubs of Greenwich Village, Norah Jones’ arrival in 2002 was one of those increasingly rare music-industry miracles. Her piano-driven debut album, Come Away With Me, with its indelible jazz-pop smash single “Don’t Know Why,” was a massive,
boundary-crossing success. As an example of “real music” that even pop-loving skeptics couldn’t deny, she was Adele before Adele. That kind of early success is almost impossible to live up to, with the follow-up, Feels Like Home, pursuing similar stylistic ground with less fruitful results. Since then, credit Jones with following her own muse: Joining up with the country-rock group the Little Willies, making her movie debut in the hands of Hong Kong master Wong Kar-Wai with the partially Memphis-shot My Blueberry Nights, and trying out newer, more modern sounds on a series of more modest solo albums. The most recent of these is the jazzy, atmospheric electro pop of this year’s Little Broken Hearts, which was produced by Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, Broken Bells).
