Re: “Three (Quick) Thoughts on the Lawsons' Exodus

@GroveReb84 and @Salim Rivers; All valid points, well stated, but the U of Memphis basketball program is sadly becoming just a memory of past glory. I too, respect Coach Smith. He's done some remarkable things. But, the truth is, his glory days are behind him. Hate to hit another raw nerve, but look at the success Josh has had at GA Tech in such a short time. Lotta folks couldn't wait to see him leave. He was young, he was Calipari's Asst. and he had a great basketball IQ. But he was too mellow and polite. All this blathering reminds me what I heard Alabama fans gripe and cry about when Bear Bryant croaked. Honestly, no coach worth his salt wants the Memphis job. Look at the talent that left under Josh and now Tubby. John Calipari was still a fairly young man when he got the Memphis job, but mature enough to reign in the egos. All of whom weren't from Memphis. I emphasize the word ego. So many of these young players were just too big for their britches. Their "talent" wasn't what they thought it was. Yet, the coach falls on the sword. The coach isn't on the court missing free throws and taking bad shots. If this gets any worse, it's back to C-USA. Memphis will simply be a non-factor in college basketball and the local talent will keep fleeing for greener pastures. Kudos to Tubby for trying and keeping it classy.

Re: “CA Advertising Staff Asked to Re-Apply for Their Jobs

I assume these employee will be "advised" to "accept" a lower salary due to "rising costs" and other veiled BS. This is code for Corporate Execs. to making even more money. And if you did a little digging, you'd most likely find NONE of these corporate executives have much in the way of a Journalism background. Just overpaid paper-shufflers. Banking and investment backgrounds. God Bless the hard-working reporters, writers, editors and all the staffers who work hard to put news and information on to the printed page.

Re: “Gannett Unveils Plan for The Commercial Appeal

@OakTree: I agree with your assessment 100%. I lived in Memphis when we had the afternoon Press Scimitar. We got breaking stories too late for the morning CA news. Political views shouldn't be an issue with the gutting by Gannett. But reporting of facts and stories should be. Especially on the local level. It takes guts and hard work to be a reporter, whether local or national. Gannett gutted the Tennessean several years ago and many long-time employees got the axe. It was a sad time and a harbinger of things to come. I support all newspapers, regardless of their content. We have the right and the power to choose what we read. Once we lose the freedom of the press and independent news gathering, it's over.

Re: “NEW UPDATE (More Names Added): More Layoffs Hit The Commercial Appeal

@LongDuckDong: the people who gave you thumbs down have no CLUE as to who the persons you named are. Mike Royko? Art Buchwald? Ask these twits if they know who Erma Bombeck was. Or Jack Anderson. Putin's plan is working perfectly. Keep the minions (the public) ignorant and uniformed. This Gannett takeover/ "downsizing"/ restructuring happened in Nashville about 7 or 8 years ago. I should have warned you. When the people get their "news" from the "internet", we are doomed. All the real journalists are being dismissed across the country. I was a Journalism major. I knew all about Watergate. I knew the details of the Patty Hearst ordeal. The Chicago Seven trial. These youngsters have NO IDEA what history is. Plus, they don't care. If it happened last week....ahhh, it's "old news" and irrelevant. Wait til their corporate masters take their phones away. Don't think it can't happen. Wait til there's only ONE service provider for cellular service. Off to the camps.

Re: “Grizzlies 101, Raptors 99: Three Thoughts

Late comment here, but relevant nevertheless: DeMar Derozan was not playing that night. I had to Google the Raptors website to find out why (ankle injury). Never heard from Pete Pranica or Devyn Knight the reason for the absence of Derozan. Grizzlies got lucky.

Re: “Tigers 99, Oklahoma 94 (OT)

Happi Johnson
I'm late getting in this comment forum, but you said everything that needed to be said. I live in Nashville and since I had to downsize my Xfinity bundle, I don't get to see most of Tiger basketball or football. Thank God this win over the Sooners was on national TV and the whole country got to see how good these guys are. Tubby kept them together after a horrific 1st half. But...they are a TEAM now and play that way. The free throw shooting is such a major improvement unto itself. This great win over a major program is HUGE!!!! The Tigers never ran out of gas even though the starters played just about the entire game. NO QUIT IN THE TIGERS!!! The kings of the Fast Break are back! Nobody does it better than the Memphis Tigers.

Re: “You Know You're From Memphis If...

1. When George Klein hosted "Dance Party" on Ch. 13, Sat. afternoons and seeing the original Gentrys; 2. When Lance Russell wore the suits he got at Baxter's; 3. When you went swimming at Lakeland; 4. "Sexy Sadie's" on the old Highland Strip; 5. Seeing Danny Owens strolling around with his "angels" on each arm @ Memphis In May 1984; 6. "Rave Nights" at TGI Friday's, dancing to New Wave music; 7. Seeing the Dave Clark 5 at the Coliseum and getting mad because they only played 40 minutes, you couldn't hear the music because of the screaming girls, and they didn't sound like their records.

  • Scotched and Trumped!

I've been trying not to write much about Donald Trump because the idiot is getting way too much publicity, but I figured not many people pay attention to me, so I'm not adding to the media frenzy that much when I state that I really do think he might be the Antichrist.
