Playhouse Party

Looking for an excuse to put on parachute pants and go walking on sunshine? Or to get lounge-y and sip cocktails? Or to have a nice meal? All three bases are covered at Playhouse on the Square's "Curtain Up: A Taste of Playhouse."

The Overton Square theater has a reputation for producing plays, but the ambitious company that recently broke ground on a new state-of-the art facility at the corner of Cooper and Union also has been known to throw some wild fund-raising parties.

"Curtain Up" is a progressive affair beginning at 7 p.m. with snacks and champagne in the theater's Memphis Room, converted for the evening into a lounge with a piano bar ably manned by frequent POTS keyboard player Renee Kemper, who, having pulled keyboards for countless musical productions, knows her way around a vast selection of show tunes.

At 8 p.m., guests are ushered into the theater's scene shop to eat dinner, sample a variety of beers and wines, and mellow out to smooth jazz in a cleaned-up space that's usually dusted in wood shavings and scattered with scenic works-in-progress.

At 9:30 p.m., guests move onto the Playhouse stage for more drinks, dessert, and a chance to travel back to the future with '80s dance band the Venus Mission (pictured).

"Curtain Up: A Taste of Playhouse," Saturday, November 8th, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $100 each and all proceeds benefit Playhouse on the Square. Call 726-4656 for additional information.
