Puppy Love

Short-haired blond male seeks a caring woman to provide gourmet meals, long walks, and perhaps a little heavy petting.

That's how a personal ad might read for one of the dog or cat "dates" available for human "singles" at the Fur-ever Friends Speed Dating event at the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County on Wednesday, November 9th, from 7 to 10 p.m.

Potential adopters will be paired with one of 18 dogs of various breeds, sizes, and personalities for four minutes in a glass-enclosed kennel before moving on to the next pet. If a match is made, the adopter can fill out their application that night for a 50 percent discount on adoption fees.

"When you're just looking at a dog through the door of a cage, that dog may not speak to you like it would if you spent time with him," said Alexis Amorose, executive manager of the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County.

Cats will also be available for speed meetings. But rather than have attendees meet with each cat, the Humane Society's adoption counselors will pre-select a few for each person based on the sort of cat they're looking for. Then the adopter will meet with a couple of pre-selected cats to determine their favorite.

"Cats wouldn't enjoy the parade of people coming through like the dogs would," Amorose said.

South of Beale, which often hosts human speed dating events, is providing hors d'oeuvres. And there will be plenty of wine and live saxophone music to set the mood.
