Q & A: With the Kutz Family

Local competitors on Fear Factor Home Invasion

Most people have one of two reactions when watching NBC's Fear Factor: "That's so gross! I could never do that," or "Hand me that bowl of cow's eyes. I'm on it."

The Kutz family of Bartlett would say the latter, which is why they applied to be on "Fear Factor Home Invasion," a new segment in which host Joe Rogan and company bring stunts right to the viewers' doorstep. The five-minute segments then air at the end of each episode.

In December, Rogan and the crew showed up at the home of Mary and Kevin Kutz and their two sons to film a segment to air on Monday, January 23rd. The family wasn't allowed to reveal the show's outcome, but they did share the details of their stinky challenge. -- by Bianca Phillips

Flyer: How did you prepare for the show?

Mary: One of the producers told us he'd be here December 17th to talk to us. We expected him to just come and talk to us. Come to find out, we were on the show. They had the Hollywood lights and Joe Rogan.

Kevin: The element of surprise was real.

What was your challenge?

Mary: It was bowl of hard-shelled black stinkbugs. We had to move over 500 of them from one bowl to another bowl with our mouths in one minute. They had little pinchers.

After you saw the stinkbugs, did either of you have second thoughts?

Mary: Not at all.

Kevin: At that point, your adrenaline is so high.

Did you get hurt?

Mary: Other than a few pinches on the lips and nose, no. It was just kind of stinky.

Did anyone get sick?

Mary: They had a puke bucket on the side, but it worked out okay.

Did the whole family take part?

Mary: Since the kids were under 18, they didn't get to participate, so they just held the bowls. I think my oldest one was a little upset about that. He lives on the edge. He was pumped. He would have done it.

did you expect something worse?

Mary: We thought it might be worse. We've seen some pretty gross stuff. Like last week, the family had to eat slugs. The week before, a family had to grind up some worms and drink them. So when they put the bugs in front of us, we thought we were going to have to eat them. But we would have done anything. We weren't backing out.
