Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings with Grace Potter & the Nocturnals

When: Sat., Sept. 18 2010
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are arguably the best and almost certainly the most enduring of the classic-soul fetishists that have emerged over the past decade. A journeyman singer who got started in the ’70s but never got her break, Jones’ voice isn’t Aretha-worthy but can hold its own with most any other female soul star of the ’60s and ’70s. Her younger cohorts aren’t a rhythm section on a par with the rhythm sections of Stax, Motown, or Muscle Shoals, but they’re a lot hotter — and more inventive — than should have been expected. For me, the band peaked with 2005’s Naturally and “How Long Do I Have To Wait For You?,” the album’s gorgeous centerpiece. But after following a striking cover of Shuggie Otis’ “Inspiration Information” for last year’s Dark Was the Night compilation with a strong new album this year, I Learned the Hard Way, it’s clear that Jones and her band are still in fine form. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings play Minglewood Hall Saturday, September 18th, with Grace Potter & the Nocturnals. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are $22 in advance and $25 day of show. — Chris Herrington
