Should He Stay Or Should He Go Now?

A prominent University of Memphis booster says basketball coach John Calipari has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at North Carolina State but may still decide to stay at Memphis.

Rick Spell, who is close to both Calipari and athletic director R. C. Johnson, said Calipari is being offered $2 million a year to compete regularly against the likes of Duke and North Carolina. Like Memphis six years ago, North Carolina State is struggling. “They need a silver bullet,” said Spell.

On the other hand, Spell says, “expectations will be through the roof,” and the results that Memphis and Calipari have achieved in the last six years — one appearance in the Elite Eight — would not satisfy NC State. Plus, Spell said, Calipari genuinely likes Memphis and has a great team coming back that will contend for the national championship.

“Before yesterday I would have said he was staying,” said Spell. “Now I’m not sure.”

  • Going For Two

Two franchise milestones are in play when the Grizzlies host the Milwaukee Bucks tonight at FedExForum. With a Grizzlies win tonight and a loss by the New Orleans/Oklahoma City, the Grizzlies would clinch their third consecutive playoff birth. A win tonight would also move Mike Fratello past Hubie Brown for most coaching wins in Grizzlies franchise history with 84. (And, yes, that’s just a dozen more games than Phil Jackson won in one season with Michael Jordan’s Bulls a few years ago.) • Smart, Not Lucky

Bucknell is not just smart guys who play a cute brand of basketball and get lucky every March, says ESPN.com. They're smart guys who can play. "They have the SATs, but they've bought into being basketball players," Bucknell head coach Pat Flannery said. "We are a bunch of brainiacs, but we also can play ball." And in another note, university founder William Bucknell still holds the NCAA record for the largest moustache.
