Sing It

On Saturday, November 25th, Kallen Esperian will perform at The Orpheum in honor of the theater's 79th birthday. The concert is titled "Kallen Steps Out," and, indeed, Esperian will step beyond the opera songs that made her famous. While Esperian will perform works from such operas as La Bohème and Madame Butterfly, most of the tunes she'll be wrapping her powerful pipes around fall outside the genre. She'll be taking on sultry torch songs ("Stormy Weather"), power ballads ("My Heart Will Go On"), bouncy movie tunes ("Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"), rock ("We Are the Champions"), and more.

It's no secret that Esperian enjoys performing different types of music. In addition to her opera recordings, she's released solo records of Christmas tunes, folk songs, and American standards. The Orpheum concert only reiterates two facts about Esperian: 1) She's a generous booster of her hometown, and 2) the lady's got range.

"Kallen Steps Out," 8 p.m., Saturday, November 25th, The Orpheum, $25-$125
