Local artist Jan Hankins talks about his latest show "Sleepless," a collection of whip-smart paintings for which toys served as muse. There will be an opening reception at Clough-Hanson Gallery Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Artists from the galleries of Palladio and Market Central will show and sell their work, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Memphis Zoo.

Birthday Celebration at The Dixon
Dixon Gallery and Gardens, 10 a.m.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Straight out of New Orleans, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, keeps a touring rigorous schedule, playing favorites such as "Bucket's Got a Hole in It" and "When the Saints Go Marching In."
Playhouse Costume Shop
Playhouse on the Square, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
Playhouse on the Square is renting costumes for Halloween. Among the offerings are wares from the camp musical Saucy Jack & the Space Vixens. Rentals run from $20 to $50, except for an Elvis jumpsuit, which is going for $150. The shop will also be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Subsidium's Carrousel of Shoppes

Big annual sale with items such as jewelry, clothes, gourmet food, and housewares. Proceeds go to the Memphis Oral School for the Deaf. The sale continues on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Star Wars and More

This Memphis Symphony Orchestra American Pops Concert is a tribute to the music of John Williams, composer of the Star Wars scores and much more. The Memphis Symphony Chorus and the University of Memphis Campus School Children's Chorus will also perform.

Power House Art Auction

A fund-raising auction for Delta Axis, including paintings by Paul D. Miller and Josh Smith and photographs by Perry Walker, Allen Frame, and Mary Mhoon Walker. A preview party begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $80 for Delta Axis members and $100 for nonmembers.
Mystery, Murder, Mayhem

"A Place at the Table" is a series of dinner parties that take place at various venues throughout the year to raise money for Friends for Life. Tonight's Place at the Table finale is the capper to all those parties and will be a masquerade ball.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical about Joseph and his wonderful coat features a number of musical styles and technical razzle-dazzle. Runs through Sunday, October 29th.
