Flyer: Just how new is the Memphis Roast Club?
Katrina Coleman: It’s brand-new but made up of comics who’ve known each other and worked together for years. We’ve held roasts among ourselves, but this benefit for Youth Villages is our first public roast.
The old Dean Martin roasts were always racy, but in recent years the roasts broadcast on Comedy Central are really dirty. Which way are you guys leaning?
First, roasting is always a sign of respect. Even if it’s in the form of insults and jokes. Some of the closed-door roasts we’ve done have been pretty down and dirty, but we can do better than that. I loved the old Dean Martin roasts and want a dignified event. As the roast master, however, I will not be getting hammered.
With a public figure like Maclin I’m sure there’s plenty of material to work with.
Oh yeah. He’s worked a lot of jobs. He ran for county clerk, was beaten up by a woman on local TV. He hit Jerry Lawler with a car. Lots of material there.
