The Ubiquitous Hammer

Editorial

Meanwhile, a $200-per-plate event is scheduled for May 12th in Washington. It is billed as "The Conservative Movement Salutes Representative Tom Delay." This is the same Tom DeLay, mind you, whose ethical excesses have been the subject of prosecutorial interest in Texas, admonishment by his House colleagues on that body's pre-purge Ethics Committee, and, most recently, the subject of renewed calls for investigation by that selfsame, post-purge committee.

Question: Just what is being saluted here? Never mind everything enumerated in the previous paragraph. Focus on a poll by SurveyUSA of 548 registered voters in DeLay's guaranteed-GOP 22nd congressional district -- one of several that was gerrymandered into ideological purity at DeLay's behest last year. Surprise? Only 42 percent of the sample approved of their congressman's performance, while 51 percent disapproved. To put it mildly, the home folks ain't salutin'.

We don't know whether the reaction of DeLay's constituents had to do with his heavy-handiness in general, with his demagoguing of the Terri Schiavo case, or simply with a sense of repugnance at the Republican majority leader's ethical lapses.

We're just happy that somebody is paying attention.
