Thee Oh Sees and Manatees at the Hi-Tone Café

Thee Oh Sees, the latest project fronted by San Francisco-based noise/psych/garage rocker John Dwyer (Pink and Brown, Coachwhips, the Hospitals), turned quite a few heads in town last September with a frenetic, crowd-pleasing set outside of Goner Records to kick off Gonerfest 7. Now the band, which released its fifth album (the very good, though unpleasantly titled Warm Slime) for the independent label In the Red last spring, returns to Memphis this week for a club date at the Hi-Tone Café, along with opening acts Manatees and vi. In particular, Manatees — an exciting new punk/experimental project from longtime local music scene fixture Abe White (of the Oscars, True Sons of Thunder, etc.), backed by a rock armada of musical cohorts including members of the Magic Kids, the Perfect Fits, and Girls of the Gravitron — is worth getting there early. Thee Oh Sees, Manatees, and vi play at the Hi-Tone Café on Sunday, February 20th. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $8 in advance, $10 at the door. — J.D. Reager
