Uh Oh: Feds May Be Looking at Rep. Mike Kernell’s Son in Palin Email Hacking

David Kernell, the 20-year-old son of Memphis state Representative Mike Kernell, a longtime Democratic legislator, is rumored to be the subject of a federal investigation into the hacking of an email account belonging to Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

A variety of sources seemed to corroborate that information, but an earlier report in The Tennessean newspaper of Nashville that Rep. Kernell himself had provided corroboration of federal authorities' interest in his son, a University of Tennessee student, has apparently been denied by the legislator.

A local FBI source has ackowledged being in contact with the Anchorage office of the FBI about the incident.

News of the hacking raced around the Internet on Thursday, though such portions of the pirated emails as have been published seem lacking in political consequence.

A conservative interpretation of the situation and some of the background can be found here.

A selection of the hacked emails can be seen here.

WOW !!! From Stacey Campfield In defense of Kernell "I would like to take a break from the news on the Sarah Palin E mail scandal and say no matter whether his son did or didn't break into the potential V.P. candidates private E mail, State Rep. Mike Kernell shouldn't be held accountable for his adult sons possible actions. Although I do not agree on many issues Mike, he is a free thinker and that sort of thing is not his style at all. I doubt highly he knew, or would approve if he knew what his son was doing." http://lastcar.blogspot.com/

Computer hacking is a felony. Hopefully this case will point that out. What he did was a Federal crime, a crime in Alaska and in Tennessee. He left a clear path back to himself. By the time this makes it through the courts Mike Kernell is going to spend a small fortune.

possibly he left a trail. if it was that easy for him to hack into a yahoo email account, it would probably be that easy for someone else to hack into his. just sayin' or it may be another case of a kid with a barely post-adolescent brain not being able to process the consequences of his actions.

" post-adolescent brain not being able to process the consequences of his actions." That describes most criminals.

Actually, that describes most men.

You are in a heap of trouble boy According to the witness, several agents arrived at The Commons of Knoxville around midnight. They presented their badges upon entering Kernell's apartment, where several students were having a party, and took down their names. The witness tells us they asked him and those who did not live in the unit to go outside. He believes the investigators took about 1.5 to 2 hours taking pictures of everything inside the apartment. Witnesses say Kernell and his friends fled the apartment when the FBI agents arrived. Kernell's three roommates were also subpoenaed, and must testify this week in Chattanooga, according to the witness.

"Rubico" posted a message claiming to have accessed Palin's mail. Others subsequently connected the Rubico handle to the e-mail address "rubico10@yahoo.com," which was in turn linked to Kernell. Yesterday, the webmaster of a Georgia-based proxy service confirmed that his server logs showed the intruder used an IP address belonging to an Illinois Internet service provider that serves the Knoxville apartment complex where Kernell lives. http://computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyName=privacy&articleId=9115370&taxonomyId=84&intsrc=kc_top
