Vegan Wines at the Corkscrew

Finding vegan food in Memphis restaurants and grocery stores is a piece of (egg-free, dairy-free) cake. But locating decent vegan wine is another story altogether. Many wines are clarified with animal byproducts, like egg albumin or gelatin, and most wines that are free of animal products aren't clearly labeled "vegan." Asking a wine store employee for help isn't always fruitful, as many don't realize that most wines aren't vegan. But on a recent stop by the Corkscrew, manager Scott Vincent not only knew about vegan wines, he was able to point to a brand that proudly displays its vegan friendliness on the label: Our Daily Red from Orleans Hill Winery. Since my visit, the shop has ordered two other varieties from the California winemaker: Cote Zero (a Rhône-style red blend) and Alexandria (a white blend). All three bottles are a steal at less than $10 each, and they're organic. Bonus: Our Daily Red and Cote Zero are also sulfite-free. — Bianca Phillips
