Vivian Girls with Widowspeak and Guests

When: Tue., Sept. 13, 9 p.m. 2011
With its spoken intro and call-and-response interplay, "Take It As It Comes," the latest single from the Brooklyn-based trio Vivian Girls, evokes '60s girl groups such as the Shangri-Las and the Angels, while the colorful video puts a punk-rock spin on a Grease scenario. This is all more a straight retro showcase than the band usually traffics in, but it still gives you an idea of what Vivian Girls are about. This lo-fi trio is probably one of the bands that fits most comfortably in both the Goner-style garage/punk scene and the blog-fueled, NYC-centric indie-rock scene-of-the-moment. I approve of them in theory and enjoy them in practice, although, as a non-devotee, I do wish their genre-bound sound came with a more discernible vocal and lyrical personality. Vivian Girls play the Hi-Tone Café on Tuesday, September 13th, with Widowspeak. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $7.
